A survey of the history and development of Chinese cinema, with primary emphasis on films produced in mainland China. The course is structured chronologically, beginning with early cinematic developments of the 1920s and concluding with contemporary works. Topics and genres addressed include leftist melodrama, Fifth Generation cinema, women’s film, animated film, and post-socialist cinema, among others.
